This has been a concern of mine for a long time. I feel that if a person (of any age) wants to spend their vacation time visiting a mission field they should -- on their dime and their time. It is the true cost of missions and would quickly deal with misplace motivations.
But I also feel that if someone has skills that are needed (say medical students in the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti) then the rest of us should shell out to get them there so that they can share the skills they have with those in deepest need.

From someone coming from the global south, I am excited to see the new need to redefine short term mission work. We generally will not look a gift horse in the mouth however bad it gets. Our cultures do not permit it.
D.Z. Niringiye's point in the Lausanne conversation on partnership models best describes what we feel. A lot of research and collaboration is required during the planning stages of a short term mission trip. This research should include and be influenced a lot by the perspectives of the receiving community so that the long term results increase the probability of success.

“Service is giving someone a glass of cold water who needs it. Justice is asking why the person needs a glass of cold water.” Service is good, she says, because it addresses real needs. But seeking justice means fixing the system that created the problem in the first place."

I heartily agree. This is why I fail to understand why the 'social justice' crowd would rather let thousands of children die while saving a few with mosquito nets when spraying DDT would rid the problem from the area and save thousands of lives. Please don't say that DDT would kill more people. When it was used in the U.S. the problem was resolved with no significant impact on people.
